the annual gathering for michel legris and living sega tipik. it falls on his birthday, but it is not a birthday: it is for the life he led and the music he left. he played the ravann and he built it. this year, kapitenn 95, his 95th.

the ravann, back on the stage
every year on 11 august, the family of michel legris, kapitenn, gathers to mark the day he was born. a pioneer of séga tipik and a master maker of the ravann, his hit single, mo capitaine, is a song the whole island calls its own.
the drum he played he also built, and that making is carried on today by josé legris. this year, for his 95th, the michel legris trust organise it, supported by babani, with kréol art, and the gathering moves inside the theatre. no distance, no filter: the ravann an arm's length away, the call and answer of the voices, a drum tuned by fire. from this year on, kapitenn is celebrated every year.
what happens, from 17h00 to the last record
photo exposition
the national heritage trust fund holds an archive on michel legris, and it comes out for this. archival photographs tracing his life and his legacy, shown in the room before the music starts.
artists' exhibition
six artists, each giving a work in homage to michel. none of them are being paid to be here. the works are for sale, and they are a voyage into sega and into kapitenn, made by people who wanted to be in the room.
live performances
doors 19h30, and it starts at 20h00 with a voice in the dark, curtain closed. no host, no compère. between each set, while the stage is being changed, the next musician tells the room a story about michel. nine passages, and it ends with everyone back on stage for kapitenn, the song he is named after. groupe étoile d'or · zeneration michel legris, his own group, is carried now by his heirs, led by priscilla and her brothers.
youth participation
the children of the cercle sociale de mahébourg, cité la chaux, open the whole night: his life told out loud, over the ravann, with dancers.

bradley paints kapitenn in front of you, through the whole exposition. come early and watch it happen. it does not exist yet, and by the time the concert starts it will.

who plays, and in what order
there is no master of ceremonies. the anecdotes happen inside the stage changes, told by the musicians themselves, so the evening keeps both the music and the talking without getting longer. nine passages, eight stage changes.

mixed medianée dans les années 90 à plaine wilhems, ses créations se sont imposées dès l'enfance, mais la curiosité ouvre sa voie vers des parcours très variés. en 2021, un retour à l'art s'inscrit comme un acte de réappropriation. sur une base de toile acrylique, elle sculpte le mixed media en associant papier, terre cuite, miroirs, ampoules, paillettes, pigments naturels et matières texturées. sur son œuvre pour kapitenn 95 : « je rends hommage à michel legris, dont la musique, la poésie et la philosophie de vie continuent d'éclairer notre mémoire collective et notre ancrage mauricien. »
